Gymnasium in the Middle of Montana

Where? Why?

A colleague snapped this photo on a recent trip. He was suprised to see this new (yet retro) Gymnasium out in the middle of nowhere. He couldn't figure it out. Neither can I, but then again how far can you get Googling, "GYMNASIUM MONTANA" ??

State Fair 2008

I love the Fair, but won't waste a lot of typing time trying to convince non-believers what makes the Minnesota State Fair so great. You either "get it" or you don't.

[View from Space Needle looking up Snelling Avenue]

The Hobbled Family spent most of Saturday at the Fair. The older the kids get, the harder it is to see all we want to see in one day. Lucky for M she is going back today with her girlfriends. Finally she can go on the Midway rides, not the Kidway rides her little brother favors.

Highlight of the day - while M and I sat on a wall outside the Horticulture building eating french fries we had clear view of both Al Franken and the Back Street Boys. Franken's booth is directly across the street from KDWB. The BSB were performing at the Grandstand on Saturday night and were making a promotion appearance at the radio station over the noon hour. Don't know much about the Boys (in fact, I don't know a single song) but they sure attracted a lot of screaming girls - more than Franken did.

Fergus Falls - They Ain't No Fargo

{Fergus Falls and its famous Otter - as in Otter Tail River, Otter Tail County, etc.]

This recent news gives me an excellent reason to post this picture taken last week during a little side-trip to Fergus Falls. But really - do I need a reason to post this picture? Probably not, but here goes:

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - The Fergus Falls City Council is turning thumbs down on allowing a movie to be filmed at a former state hospital.

Do they fear they will become the next Fargo, which some feel was slighted by the Coen brothers movie. Can't comment myself as I never saw Fargo - the movie that is. I've seen the city. comments on the "fracas":

That said, Fergus Falls is a nice part of the state, even though the name of the town sounds like what happens when Fergus drinks too much.

We were in "The Falls" as I'll call it to see the Friends of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center. I'm calling it "The Falls" rather than the local moniker "Fergus" - as that sounds too much like Vergas (pop. 311) where I also spend a lot of time.

My two-cents: Lovely town, enjoyed lunch at the Viking Cafe, and dessert later at Dairyland.

Storms a Brewin'

Snapped this last week on "Lonnie's Park Road". It's a shot of distant thunderheads gathering strength - probably out somewhere over North Dakota. You can see forever up at the cabin.

I Wasn't Expecting Martin Luther

Stepped out at noon to watch the kids in the Stagecoach Theater summer camp Mulan performance. Stagecoach holds classes at Concordia University in St. Paul. Funny, I've always entered the theater area from the North side and never come around back where the various college buildings are. It's very nice with some cool statutes like this Martin Luther rising out of the native Minnesota prairie plantings.

I won't promise that I'm back from my self-imposed blogging vacation. It's been very, very busy at work and home. Hope I can catch my breath and blog a bit more in coming days and weeks. I've got a lot to say - just no time to say it. Whew!
